Author's notes: This is a "missing scene" from "The Scribbling Lark and the Blackthorn Tree," or more accurately, part of the first section from Luna's PoV. I have given up on figuring out exactly how the Protean Charm works, since the answer seems to be "however JKR wanted it to at that particular moment." However, if you had an issue with the timing in the first scene of story, this missing scene may enlighten you.

It stands alone as a ficlet, so no need to read "The Scribbling Lark and the Blackthorn Tree" to read this one. It's also one of the few skeletal threads that remain from the original dark!fic bunny, but isn't particularly dark, I don't think. Neither is it happiness and joy by any means.

I must admit that as the story grew (and grew and grew and grew some more) it drew upon knowledge of the blackthorn tree itself along with the associations given in the prompt, perhaps even more so. Contrary to (or in conjunction with, if you look at it that way) the association with offensive magic, blackthorns are "defender" trees, acting as a thorny protector for both animals and younger trees alike and allowing them to grow unhindered by predators. Despite its outward appearance, it's one of the great nurturers of the plant world.

Hopefully it shall still pass muster for the challenge.

1:31am: And Pixy said let there be fic, and there was fic.
And Lo, on the fifth day Pixy didst finish her fanfic, and she looked upon it and saw that it was... not completely horrible. And then she didst send it to the mighty Senjy, who saith forthwith: "Lo, it is not sucky at all!" And thus endeth the sixth day. On the seventh day, Pixy hath posted her fic, and she didst rejoice, yea, verily.

Or something like that, but I swear I heard an angelic choir singing the freaking Hallelujah Chorus as I made the final edits.

And now for the good part. In the interests of bringing my flist the beauty of prime crack, even when I am not writing it myself, I am making a rec. I've been reading almost no fanfic due to the above-mentioned time issues, but this one had a pun in the title, and you know me and puns. They're like kryptonite, in a way.

I am so glad I did read it. It's absolutely hilarious, and it even resolves one of the lingering questions about DH, hehe. So go forth and read Toadal Annihilation now. It's gen focusing on Trevor, Neville, and Luna, with no pairings unless you read between the lines, so it's fun for the whole family!

Wait, I take that back. It does have a pairing, but... *clutches sides laughing* You'll just have to read it.

8:47pm: School Daze
And for my first run with using Semagic, I shall not be doing the "where else I am and where you can get that sweet, sweet unlocked mature-rated Pixy!crack" post.

Instead, I shall attempt to bring some non-LJ-idiocy humor. We've been having lots of back-to-school sales recently, of course. On Thursday, I had to turn in my request for time off for the new schedule, which got me to thinking about how different my school preparations have become over the years.
